Good to know

Where to stay

Theth is a scattered valley village, not a town. Almost everyone stays in a family guesthouse with dinner and breakfast included, which is both the cheapest and by far the best option.

The walks

People come to Theth to walk. Everything else is secondary.

Getting there

How long to stay

Worth knowing before you go

Combine with

The road up, and why old advice is wrong

Theth used to be a four-wheel-drive expedition. It is not any more, and a great deal of what is still written about it dates from before that changed.

From Shkodër it is about eighty kilometres and roughly two hours: SH1 north to Koplik, then the SH21 the whole way up. The SH21 is now fully paved. It is still a mountain road that asks for your attention, with drops and blind bends and a pass to cross, but it does not need a special vehicle.

Theth is one end of a loop

This is the thing to understand before booking anything. Most people do not visit Theth and come back the way they came. They travel a circuit, and the circuit is the reason the Albanian Alps are worth the effort.

The standard version runs: Shkodër, then an early minibus to the Koman dam, then the Koman Lake ferry through a gorge that is the single most spectacular piece of transport in the country, on to Fierzë, then a transfer up to Valbona. You sleep there, walk over the pass to Theth the next day, and come back to Shkodër by road.

The timings that matter

The Valbona hike, in practice

Roughly seventeen kilometres and six to eight hours over the pass, well marked throughout. It is hard rather than technical: no scrambling, no exposure that needs a head for heights, just a long sustained climb and a long descent.

Book accommodation at both ends well ahead for July and August. There are only so many beds in either valley and they genuinely run out.

Where it is

Theth: frequently asked questions

How hard is the Theth to Valbona hike?
Six to eight hours with a long climb to the pass, well marked and not technical. Reasonable fitness and proper shoes are enough. Most people arrange for their luggage to be driven round and walk with a day pack.
Can you drive to Theth?
Yes. The road from Shkodër is paved the whole way now and takes two and a half to three hours in an ordinary car. This changed only recently, so older advice about needing a 4x4 is out of date.
Where should I stay in Theth?
In a family guesthouse, which is what almost everyone does. Half board is standard and the dinner is usually the best meal of the trip. Book ahead for July and August.
What is the Blue Eye of Theth?
A cold spring pool below a waterfall, about two and a half hours on foot there and back from the village. It is a completely different place from the larger Blue Eye near Sarandë in the south.
When is Theth open?
Roughly June to October. Snow closes the pass and most guesthouses through the winter.
Is there wifi and mobile signal in Theth?
Patchy. Guesthouses often have wifi that works some of the time, and mobile data is unreliable. Download maps before you arrive and bring cash.
Do you need a 4x4 to get to Theth?
No, not any more. The SH21 from Shkodër is now fully paved and a normal car manages it in season, though it is still a mountain road with drops and blind bends. A lot of advice online predates the resurfacing. Do check your rental agreement, since some exclude mountain roads regardless of surface.
How do you get from Shkodër to Theth?
It is about eighty kilometres and two hours, taking the SH1 to Koplik then the SH21 all the way up. You can drive it, take a shared furgon minibus from the centre of Shkodër, or arrange a private taxi for roughly ten thousand lek for the car.
What is the Koman Lake ferry and do I need it?
It is the boat through the Koman gorge that connects Shkodër with Fierzë, and it is how most people reach Valbona to start the hike to Theth. You do not need it if you are only visiting Theth by road, but it turns an out-and-back trip into a loop and is worth building the itinerary around.
